Looking below on the Rocket 22 you could easily be forgiven for thinking the boat is longer than 22 feet. With 4 adult sized bunks, a twin V berth forward and two quarter berths, the Rocket 22 has more space down below than most comparable boats.
The cabin is well organized and can be nicely finished with an option of covered cushions for both the V and quarter berths. Light enters the cabin through both the companionway hatch and the smaller spinnaker hatch forward. Optional 12V lighting is available for overnighting or weekenders.
The main cabin has ample headroom and is just over 9’ cross at its widest point. The single quarter berths are more than 6' long and 28” wide making them comfortable for most adults. Storage compartments are located beneath each quarter berth and could be used to house a 12V battery.
The forepeak V berth is 6' wide at the main bulkhead and almost 7' in length. There is good storage in the forepeak which is also used to store a small optional portable toilet. Underneath the V berth is additional storage space suitable for most items required on a 22 foot boat including an anchor box.
Aft of the companionway and below the cockpit is open for more storage. This space is readily accessible and does not require moving or detaching any part. At the foot of the companionway is a space dedicated to a secondary cooler in addition to the built in cockpit cooler immediately forward of the control center.
The interior construction has been simplified by keeping the surfaces flat, continuous and the same level. Installation is straightforward with the entire pan lowered into the hull. The final bonding of the flange joint makes for a strong, simple and visually attractive finish. The various horizontal surfaces, such as the forward and aft bunk areas, are made of lightweight foam, sandwiched with glass and finished in gel coat. These add tremendous stiffening with only nominal increases in weight.
The storage and retrieval of sails and gear during racing is fast and simple thanks to clean sight lines and smooth sliding surfaces. Accessibility of other equipment or personal effects during racing conditions is also very manageable. Similarly, crew movement below decks, is practical and convenient due to the large expanse with minimal clutter.
The same features that make this an extremely functional racer also lend themselves to comfortable and relaxing cruising. The Rocket 22 has been refined and optimized for racing but the interior space has not been compromised and will satisfy even the most discriminating cruiser.
